Switching your Invisalign trays too early can lead to serious dental health complications and inefficient treatment. Each aligner is precision-engineered to move specific teeth a fraction of a millimeter over a set period, usually seven to fourteen days. If you jump to the next tray before the current movement is complete, you are applying excessive force to teeth that haven’t stabilized. This can cause root resorption, where the roots of your teeth actually shorten, potentially leading to tooth loss. The new tray likely won’t fit perfectly, creating a gap between the plastic and the teeth known as poor tracking. This lack of contact prevents the aligner from doing its job, eventually requiring a “mid-course refinement” or new scans.
